Understanding solar panels
SolarBazaar lists 26 solar panels for Pakistan, including ranges from LONGi, Canadian Solar, Jinko, JA Solar and Trina Solar. A solar panel (photovoltaic module) converts sunlight directly into DC electricity, with no moving parts and no fuel.
Panels are the generating half of the system and the part that determines how much energy is available at all. They are also the longest-lived component, routinely still producing over 80% of their original output after 25 years.
The specifications that matter
When you compare solar panels on this page, these are the fields worth putting side by side. Anything else is secondary until these line up with the rest of your system.
- rated power in watt-peak (Wp) measured at standard test conditions
- module efficiency, typically 19–23% on current products
- cell technology — mono PERC, N-type TOPCon, HJT, or bifacial
- temperature coefficient of power, usually −0.26 to −0.35 %/°C
- first-year and annual degradation, and the performance warranty that guarantees them
- physical dimensions and weight, which decide what fits your roof and mounting
- open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current (Isc) for string design
How to choose a solar panel
- Compare cost per watt rather than price per panel — a higher-wattage module is often cheaper per watt and needs fewer mounting rails, clamps and cable runs.
- Prefer a lower (closer to zero) temperature coefficient in hot climates. Panels lose output as they heat up, and on a 45 °C roof the difference between −0.34 %/°C and −0.29 %/°C is real energy over a year.
- Read both warranties. The product warranty (typically 12–15 years, up to 25 on premium modules) covers manufacturing defects; the separate performance warranty guarantees output — commonly 87–92% remaining at year 25.
- Check the physical dimensions against your usable roof area before ordering. Modern modules are large, and a layout that works on paper can fail against obstructions, walkways and setback rules.
- Consider N-type TOPCon or bifacial modules where space is tight or the mounting is elevated and reflective — bifacial gains of 5–15% are realistic over a light-coloured flat roof or the ground, and close to zero flush against a dark tile roof.
- Keep every panel in a string identical in model and rating. Mismatched modules in one string pull the whole string down to the weakest one.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the highest wattage available without checking the inverter's MPPT voltage window — a string that sits outside the window produces less, or nothing.
- Assuming rated power is what you will see. Real-world output at midday is typically 75–85% of the nameplate figure after temperature, soiling, wiring and inverter losses.
- Underestimating shade. A single shaded cell can suppress an entire string unless you use module-level optimisers or microinverters.
- Ignoring certification. IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 are the baseline; without them, warranty claims and grid approvals get complicated.
Frequently asked questions
How many solar panels do I need?
Divide your target daily generation in kilowatt-hours by the daily production of one panel, which is roughly its rated wattage multiplied by your location's peak sun hours (commonly 4–5.5) and about 0.8 for real-world losses. A 550 W panel in a 5-peak-sun-hour location therefore yields around 2.2 kWh per day, so a home needing 20 kWh a day would want approximately nine to ten panels.
Are more expensive solar panels worth it?
They are when roof space is limited or conditions are harsh. Premium N-type modules bring higher efficiency, better temperature behaviour, lower annual degradation and longer warranties, all of which raise lifetime yield per square metre. If you have ample space and mild conditions, mainstream mono PERC modules usually give a better return per unit spent.
How long do solar panels last?
Panels are normally warranted to still produce 80–92% of rated output after 25 years, and many keep working well beyond that. They are the most durable part of a solar system — inverters and batteries will typically be replaced once or twice before the panels are retired.
