Canadian Solar Announces Resolution of Maxeon US Patent Litigation

Canadian Solar Inc. announced that the final United States legal matter concerning patent accusations initiated by Maxeon Solar Pte. Ltd. has concluded in favor of Canadian Solar. The patent infringement case within the Federal District Court concluded with a dismissal with prejudice, while the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit set aside the applicable part of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board decision tied to the remaining claim.

The legal actions originated from a lawsuit filed in March 2024 by Maxeon involving three patents tied to TOPCon solar cell technology. During January 2026, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board issued Final Written Decisions in favor of Canadian Solar, determining that all Maxeon patent claims targeted at the company within the federal court litigation were invalid.

Colin Parkin, Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Solar Inc., stated that the company is pleased with the outcome, which validates its capability to compete via technology and manufacturing expertise. Parkin noted that Canadian Solar honors intellectual property rights while maintaining its commitment to defending its technology, assisting customers, and introducing innovations.

Established in 2001 and based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canadian Solar operates as a global solar technology and renewable energy enterprise. Over twenty-five years of operation, the company has supplied nearly 177 GW of solar photovoltaic modules internationally. Through its e-STORAGE subsidiary, it shipped over 20 GWh of battery energy storage systems globally by March 31, 2026, alongside a $3.5 billion contracted backlog as of May 8, 2026.
