Understanding batteries

Storage is what turns a solar array from a daytime bill-reducer into a system that covers evening loads and rides through outages. It is normally the single most expensive component, so sizing it correctly matters more than with any other part.

How to choose a battery

  • Compare usable kilowatt-hours, not nameplate capacity. A 100 Ah lead-acid battery at 12 V is nominally 1.2 kWh but only about 0.6 kWh is safely usable, while a 100 Ah LiFePO4 pack gives you roughly 1.0–1.2 kWh.
  • Size from your evening consumption. Add up what actually runs after sunset for the hours you want covered, then divide by the usable capacity per unit — that number, not the array size, sets how many batteries you need.
  • Check the continuous discharge rating against your inverter. A battery that stores plenty of energy but can only deliver 50 A cannot support a large inverter at full output.
  • Match voltage to the inverter, and confirm the battery appears on the inverter maker's supported list. Closed-loop communication lets the inverter respect the battery's real charge limits instead of guessing.
  • Read the warranty in full: lithium warranties are stated as a term plus either a cycle count or a total energy throughput, and whichever limit arrives first ends the cover.
  • Leave room to expand. Packs that parallel cleanly let you add capacity later; ones that do not force a full replacement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing old and new batteries, or different chemistries, in one bank. The weakest unit drags the whole bank down and can be damaged by the others.
  • Sizing the bank for total daily consumption rather than after-dark consumption, which typically doubles the cost for no benefit.
  • Installing lithium packs in an unventilated, hot enclosure. Sustained high temperature is the fastest way to lose cycle life.
  • Ignoring the charge current limit and pairing a large array with a small bank, which trips protection and shortens life.

Work out the kilowatt-hours you consume between sunset and sunrise, decide how many hours of that you want backed up, then divide by the usable capacity of one unit. As a rough guide, a home covering lights, fans, a refrigerator and a television overnight needs about 5 kWh of usable storage; adding air conditioning or electric cooking can double or triple that.

Is LiFePO4 better than a lead-acid battery for solar?

For almost every solar application, yes. LiFePO4 delivers three to six times the cycle life, allows 80–100% depth of discharge against roughly 50% for lead-acid, is around 20% more efficient round-trip, and needs no watering or equalisation. The purchase price is higher, but cost per usable kilowatt-hour over the battery's life is normally lower.

A quality LiFePO4 pack is typically rated for 3,000–6,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, which works out to roughly 8–15 years of daily cycling.
