Urban design firm Aire commune has launched Espace solaire, which is being described as the first outdoor public space in Quebec to rely entirely on solar power.
Situated within Montreal's Olympic Park, the permanent installation merges renewable energy production, energy storage, and public amenities. The setup incorporates shaded structures, built-in furniture, electrical outlets, Wi-Fi-enabled work areas, and landscaping to accommodate various activities.
Visible solar panels are incorporated into the physical design to generate electricity while defining the aesthetic character of the area. The site is intended to serve as a venue for people to meet, unwind, or work in an outdoor setting.
Philippe Pelletier, co-founder of Aire commune, stated that the project reflects the firm's goal to build functional, sustainable, and accessible public zones by embedding solar technology directly into the architecture.
Developed in partnership with Sunbird Énergie, the installation showcases how local solar generation, power storage, and smart management can aid the region's shift toward clean energy, according to Sunbird Énergie founder and president Simon Lafleur.
The development also aligns with the ongoing conversion of Montreal's Olympic Park into an urban park utilized throughout the year.
