Choosing a battery is only half the job. The real question is whether your battery and inverter can actually work together — and most system problems start right here. This video breaks down what compatibility really means in a live install. If charge voltages or current limits don't line up, your inverter throttles charging or stops early, leaving energy in the battery that you simply cannot reach. You get slower recharge after an outage, unexpected fault warnings, and backup that falls short exactly when you need it. We cover the four checks that matter most: Voltage matching — 12V, 24V and 48V banks must match the inverter exactly, and high-voltage stacks from 100V to 600V are designed to work as a matched pair. Always compare the battery's full operating window against the inverter's DC input range. Chemistry and charge profile — LiFePO4 delivers 4,000 to 7,000 cycles at 92% to 98% round-trip efficiency, NMC packs more energy into less space with 2,000 to 4,000 cycles, and lead-acid still has a place where budgets are tight. Each needs a different charge profile. Communication — CAN or RS485 lets the inverter read state of charge, current limits and temperature in real time. Without it the system runs open-loop on fixed settings, with less precise charging and more protective trips. Usable capacity — nameplate is not what you get. A 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery at 90% DoD gives about 9 kWh. A 10 kWh lead-acid battery at 50% DoD gives about 5 kWh. Same headline number, very different reality. Compatibility also affects safety and warranty. Many manufacturers tie coverage to approved pairings, so an unsupported combination can limit or void your claim. Start with the inverter specification sheet, confirm the supported battery list, then size for your real loads rather than ideal ones.
