Germany’s solar power output rises as renewables gain momentum in its clean energy transition.
Germany’s solar power capacity has continued to expand rapidly, propelled by rooftop installations, large-scale solar farms, and supportive clean energy policies, bolstering the country’s energy security and climate objectives.
In the first half of 2026, Germany produced more electricity from solar sources than certain countries generate from their primary renewable energy options, advancing Europe’s move toward a more sustainable power system.
Data from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) shows Germany’s total installed solar capacity reached approximately 124.9 gigawatts, up from about 118 gigawatts at the start of the year.
The country generated an estimated 43.2 terawatt hours of solar electricity during the period, accounting for roughly 18.2 percent of its overall electricity output—a notable rise from the same timeframe in the previous year, according to PV Tech.
This growth stems from both expansive ground-mounted solar projects and widespread rooftop systems, which have become integral to the national electricity mix.
Long-standing renewable energy policies, targeted incentives for rooftop solar, and increased public and private funding have underpinned the progress.
The surge in solar generation is contributing to reduced dependence on fossil fuels, enhanced air quality, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and greater energy self-sufficiency.
