Canada invests in clean energy in Alberta and Saskatchewan

On the sidelines of the Calgary Stampede, the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced funding exceeding $26 million for 17 initiatives across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The investment is intended to speed up the rollout of clean technologies, upgrade energy infrastructure and systems, cut emissions, and strengthen the regulatory, industrial and workforce capabilities required to support Canada's long-term economic development and energy security.

Canada continues to be a global leader in both clean and conventional energy, and the federal government says it is expanding on that foundation to deliver dependable, affordable energy and technology for Canadians. Investments in energy infrastructure are expected to reinforce the country's energy security, generate quality employment opportunities, encourage new investment and strengthen Canada's role as a trusted energy supplier for both domestic and international markets.

The announced funding includes:

$14.9 million allocated to 10 projects that will support energy storage, solar and wind power development, planning for interprovincial electricity transmission, Indigenous-led clean energy initiatives and workforce training.

$5.9 million designated for engineering and design activities related to two facilities that will transform waste biomass into renewable natural gas while incorporating carbon capture technology.

$3.5 million for two projects focused on lowering methane emissions from upstream oil and gas operations and advancing low-emission cement alternatives capable of permanently storing carbon.

$2.3 million for three projects aimed at promoting more energy-efficient building codes.

The Government of Canada said that by promoting low-carbon energy, clean technologies and greater energy efficiency, it is helping Canadians reduce costs, encouraging economic growth and strengthening Canada's position as an energy superpower for both the present and the future.

“Energy is the backbone of our economy — so by growing and modernizing the systems that we have, we can catalyze investment, generate jobs and prosperity, and build the strongest economy in the G7. Through these investments, we will stabilize energy costs, reduce emissions and lay the foundation for long-term economic growth.”

The Honourable Tim Hodgson

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources

“Through investments in Indigenous-led clean energy projects, we are supporting First Nations as they strengthen energy security, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and create new opportunities for future generations. Projects like these reflect the leadership of communities as they explore and develop renewable energy solutions that advance economic growth, environmental stewardship and greater self-determination. By working together, we are helping build stronger, more resilient communities while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.”

The Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty

Minister of Indigenous Services

Most of the federal funding included in this group of projects is being delivered through the Government of Canada's Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREPs). Valued at $4.5 billion, the program is intended to support electricity grid modernization, energy storage and renewable energy technologies in every region of the country, helping expand Canada's electricity network in a sustainable, reliable and cost-effective way.

Indigenous Services Canada has also provided $649,000 for electricity projects led by Indigenous organizations to support the pre-development activities needed before launching solar energy projects.

The Energy Innovation Program (EIP) supports the advancement of clean energy technologies that will enable Canada to maintain a competitive, dependable and affordable energy system while moving toward a low-carbon economy.

Canada's National Electricity Strategy is designed to double the country's electricity grid capacity by 2050 while delivering clean, reliable and affordable power nationwide for decades ahead.

The funding announcement also builds on commitments made during the 2026 Energy and Mine Ministers' Conference (EMMC) on June 26, when support was announced for intertie transmission projects connecting Yukon with British Columbia, Alberta with British Columbia, Alberta with Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan with Manitoba.
