Overview

The Sunny Tripower X 12kW - 25kW 3-phase inverters are the ideal system solution for commercial and large home PV systems. Integrated System Manager function with direct access to Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS monitors up to five SMA inverters and one energy meter. This enables the dynamic closed-loop control of active and reactive power via SMA Dynamic Power Control. Thanks to the wide input voltage range and the high input current capability, it is compatible with the latest generation of high-performance PV modules. The innovative enclosure design ensures efficient cooling of the electronic components and thus guarantees maximum lifetime of the Sunny Tripower X. Commissioning can be performed quickly and easily as well as centrally for all devices in the system. During operation, users benefit from integrated software solutions: SMA ShadeFix increases PV yields even in the event of partial shading, while SMA ArcFix detects electric arcs effectively and can reliably reduce the risk of fire. Integrated system manager Monitoring and control for up to 5 inverters (max. 135 kVA) included Direct access to Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS SMA Dynamic Power Control Safety included SMA ArcFix arc-fault circuit interrupter DC overvoltage protection Simplified grid and PV system protection Maximum yields Yield increase through integrated SMA ShadeFix I-V generator diagnostics Direct selling with SMA SPOT SMA Smart Connected More flexibility 3 MPP trackers High input current for high performance PV modules Modular design allowing expansion for future energy management functions

Reading the specifications

SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 is listed with 14 published specifications from SMA, including power rating of 12000W, MPPT trackers of 3, phases of Three phase and connectivity of Wi-Fi, Ethernet. Those figures are what decide whether this unit fits your system, so read them against the equipment it will connect to before comparing price.

For an inverter, the figures that matter most are the MPPT voltage window, which decides how many panels go in a string, peak and weighted (European/CEC) efficiency, typically 96–98.5%, topology — on-grid, off-grid, hybrid or micro and continuous AC output in kW, which caps the load you can run at once. It is the component that decides what a solar system can do: how much power you can draw at once, whether you can export to the grid, whether the system keeps running in a blackout, and how well the panels and battery are managed day to day.

Choosing an inverter: the checks that matter

The checks below apply to any inverter. Run them against the specification table above — most disappointing solar purchases are compatible-on-paper units that fail one of these in practice.

  • Check the surge rating if you run motors — deep-well pumps, compressors and older air conditioners can draw two to three times their running current for a few seconds at start-up.
  • Choose a hybrid inverter if a battery is in your plan now or later; retrofitting storage onto a pure grid-tie inverter usually means buying a second unit or an AC-coupled battery system.
  • Confirm the inverter is approved by your local utility or distribution network before you buy if you intend to export power — grid connection depends on certified anti-islanding and local grid-code compliance, not on the inverter's specifications alone.
  • Match the battery communication protocol (CAN bus or RS485) between inverter and battery. Compatible voltages are not enough; without a supported protocol the battery management system and inverter cannot agree on charge limits.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring the ambient temperature rating. Inverters derate in heat, so a unit rated 5 kW at 25 °C may deliver noticeably less on a hot roof-adjacent wall at 45 °C.
  • Assuming any grid-tie inverter keeps the lights on during an outage. Standard on-grid units shut down for safety unless they have a dedicated backup or islanding output.
  • Overlooking the IP rating. An outdoor installation needs at least IP65; indoor-rated units mounted outside fail early.

Price and availability in United Kingdom

SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 is listed at £ 1,895 (GBP) for United Kingdom. Solar pricing moves with supply, import duties and exchange rates, and distributors set their own margins, so treat this as a comparison reference and confirm the current figure before you order.

SolarBazaar compares equipment rather than selling it. Shortlist here on specification and price, then buy from an authorised distributor or installer in United Kingdom: warranty cover on solar hardware is normally honoured through the channel you bought from, so confirm who supports SMA locally before ordering.

SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 — frequently asked questions

How much does SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 cost?

SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 is listed at £ 1,895 (GBP) for United Kingdom. The figure is indicative — solar prices move with supply, duties and exchange rates, and each distributor sets its own margin — so confirm the current price with a supplier before ordering.

What are the specifications of SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25?

We hold 14 published specifications for this inverter, including power rating 12000W, MPPT trackers 3, phases Three phase, connectivity Wi-Fi, Ethernet and connection Sunclix (solar), Connector (AC). The full table is on this page, listed under model STP-12-50.

Who makes SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25?

SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 is a SMA product, listed under inverters with model reference STP-12-50. The SMA brand page lists the rest of its range so you can compare across the catalogue.

Is SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 right for my system?

That depends on what it has to connect to. For an inverter, check surge or peak rating, which covers the brief inrush of motors and compressors, maximum PV input and the number of MPPT trackers, which set how many panel strings you can connect and the MPPT voltage window, which decides how many panels go in a string against the rest of your equipment before price enters the decision. Keep the panel array between roughly 1.0 and 1.3 times the inverter's rating. Slight oversizing (a higher DC-to-AC ratio) captures more energy on cloudy mornings and winter days; going far beyond it wastes generation through clipping.

Where can I buy SMA Sunny Tripower X 12 / 15 / 20 / 25 in United Kingdom?

SolarBazaar lists and compares equipment rather than selling it. Use the specifications and price here to shortlist, then buy through an authorised distributor or installer in United Kingdom — buying in-channel is what keeps the manufacturer's warranty valid.
