US. solar industry advances cybersecurity as domestic manufacturing expands

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) has issued a report that maps out steps to bolster cybersecurity in the U.S. solar and energy storage sectors while advancing domestic manufacturing growth.

The document was released amid ongoing expansion in the country's solar and battery storage production capabilities. U.S. inverter manufacturing has almost tripled since the close of 2024. With the launch of a new inverter factory in July, the United States now ranks tied for second globally in inverter production.

The report examines rising cybersecurity risks in the energy industry and underscores the need for secure solutions supported by robust domestic supply chains. Created with input from industry players and government partners, it offers guidance, recommended practices and tools to enhance security readiness throughout the solar and storage supply chain.

SEIA noted that the swift rollout of solar and battery storage installations has elevated cybersecurity as a key element of broader energy security. The group emphasized that reinforcing U.S. manufacturing and supply chain strength can safeguard vital infrastructure and limit vulnerabilities to changing cyber risks.

SEIA President and CEO Tim Pawlenty stated that as solar and storage drive most new additions to the power grid, cybersecurity needs to stay a top priority. He highlighted the report's focus on secure systems and increased domestic production as ways the sector is working to enhance national energy security, protect critical assets and address new threats.

The recommendations include growing domestic solar and storage production via stronger supply chains, increased transparency and reliable manufacturing capabilities. The report also supports uniform cybersecurity standards for the industry, national-level direction for distributed energy resources, and better collaboration on sharing information to improve detection of threats and communication of risks.
