The U.S. solar and energy storage industries reached multiple generation and deployment milestones during the first half of 2026, driven by rising national electricity demand and increasing retail energy prices. According to data from the Solar Energy Industries Association, these technologies have expanded beyond emerging resources to become central components of regional power systems.

In the opening quarter of 2026, solar and energy storage together represented 91% of all new electricity generation capacity connected to the U.S. grid, marking a record collective quarterly share. Solar maintained its position as the top source of new generation capacity for a fifth consecutive year, while utility-scale battery deployment continued its growth.

For the first time in national history, monthly solar generation surpassed coal generation in May 2026. A decade ago, solar contributed a minimal portion of the country's energy mix, but it now provides roughly 13% of total domestic electricity demand.

Regional grid operators also reported historic metrics amid competitive technology costs and fast installation timelines. Within the California Independent System Operator footprint, the battery storage fleet discharged a record 12.99 gigawatts of power on the evening of July 9, 2026, supplying 36% of regional demand at peak output to ease post-sunset strain.

The following day, CAISO registered a new solar generation peak of 23 gigawatts, satisfying 72% of regional afternoon demand. This achievement represented California's third time breaking its own solar generation record since June 1, 2026.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas recorded several spring and early summer milestones, including battery storage supplying 20% of evening demand on March 13 and total renewables meeting 79% of state electricity demand on March 14. Texas solar generation reached a peak of 34.427 gigawatts on May 13 before being surpassed on July 9 at 35.425 gigawatts, while combined renewables hit an absolute peak of 52 gigawatts on May 14.

Texas remains the country's fastest-growing utility-scale solar market and the second-largest energy storage market. Alongside California and Texas, transmission organizations including the Southwest Power Pool, ISO New England, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, and the PJM Interconnection all established new solar generation highs during the preceding three months amid record-high maximum grid loads.
