A newly completed rooftop solar installation at Schutz Canada Inc.’s manufacturing plant in Belleville, Ontario, is projected to cover approximately 33 percent of the facility's yearly power demands and reach financial payback in just over three years. Featuring more than 2,700 solar modules spread across the 230,000-square-foot container production building, the array is designed to reduce the organization's annual power expenditures by more than $300,000.

EcoGrid Renewables Inc., a Toronto-based firm assisting Schutz with its North American energy strategy, acted as the primary contractor, oversaw system design, and determined the financial projections. German industrial packaging manufacturer Schutz pursued the development to align with environmental goals, particularly as carbon emissions from Ontario's electrical grid have risen due to increased natural gas usage during ongoing nuclear plant refurbishments.

The project also served as a financial hedge against macroeconomic challenges, high inflation, trade disputes with the U.S., and rising utility costs. EcoGrid president Greg Sommers noted that the installation represented the single greatest cost-reduction measure implemented across Schutz's worldwide operations during the previous year, generating peak electricity during high-demand daytime hours when grid power is most expensive.

Construction on the site began in November 2024 and concluded in March 2025, with Otter Energy of Picton, Ontario, handling labor and electrical installation under a subcontract. Capable of generating over 1.5 megawatts annually, the solar setup will eliminate more than 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, representing roughly 16 percent of the Canadian plant's Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas output.

The Belleville operation continues to draw its remaining power requirements from Ontario's central grid, though Schutz plans to incorporate battery storage systems at the facility in future years. The company intends to establish the Ontario location as a regional sustainability model as it prepares to deploy additional rooftop solar installations across its properties in the United States.

The project arrives alongside growing momentum for Canadian commercial rooftop solar development. A 2024 assessment by Natural Resources Canada analyzing 11 municipalities estimated that institutional and commercial rooftops nationwide possess between 36 and 90 gigawatts of potential solar capacity. Major provincial installations include a 7.5-megawatt system operated by Loblaws in East Gwillimbury and multi-megawatt rooftop arrays deployed by Oxford Properties across industrial sites and shopping centers in Ontario.
