The Union of the Comoros has officially opened three solar photovoltaic facilities boasting a combined capacity of around 20 MW, funded through a roughly AED84.4 million investment from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). Constructed by Masdar and managed by Global South Utilities (GSU), the strategic initiative was formally inaugurated by Comorian President Azali Assoumani alongside representatives from ADFD, Masdar, GSU, and UAE diplomatic officials.

Distributed across the nation's three main islands, the project features 12.86 MW of solar capacity on Grande Comore, 4.05 MW on Anjouan, and 3.1 MW on Mohéli. The installation is backed by 16 MWh of battery energy storage capacity capable of delivering 8 MW of output across Grande Comore and Anjouan, alongside approximately 30 km of 20-kV medium-voltage overhead power lines.

The renewable facilities are projected to generate about 33.75 GWh of clean power annually, sufficient to supply approximately 17,500 households while mitigating around 20,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. This output accounts for roughly 13.3% of the island nation's total electricity demand and 22.5% of its current generation output.

The inauguration comes as the Comoros works to address critical energy supply shortfalls and reduce its dependency on imported diesel, which made up 91% of its energy supply matrix in 2024. During that year, actual power generation reached only 150 GWh against a total demand of 254 GWh, resulting in roughly 3,000 blackouts.

During the ceremony, President Assoumani expressed appreciation to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting that the initiative strengthens the country's energy infrastructure and enhances economic resilience. Jumaa Rashid Alromaithi, UAE Ambassador to the Comoros, noted that the facility demonstrates how paired solar and storage technologies can address local energy demands.

ADFD Director General Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi stated that the investment aims to shield the Comorian economy from volatile fuel import costs while improving grid reliability. Masdar Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi and GSU Managing Director and CEO Ali Abdulla Alshimmari added that combining generation, energy storage, and network infrastructure provides a viable pathway toward long-term energy security and sustainable growth across the archipelago.
