Octopus Energy is moving forward with the creation of a 100-home “Zero Bills Homes” community in France that will integrate rooftop solar power, heat pumps, battery storage, and intelligent energy management technologies. Through a combination of optimized self-consumption, aggregated residential energy assets, and participation in flexibility services, the development is intended to deliver zero net electricity costs for homeowners over a 10-year period.

The company has revealed plans for a new housing development in Ille-et-Vilaine, France, built around its “Zero Bills Homes” concept. Situated at Domaine de la Massaye in Guichen-Pont-Réan, the development will consist of approximately 100 newly constructed residences designed with the objective of eliminating net electricity bills over a decade.

The development will integrate rooftop photovoltaic installations, advanced smart energy management systems, and residential battery storage to increase on-site electricity consumption while minimizing dependence on the public power grid.

Its energy strategy centers on combining photovoltaic modules, heat pumps, and household battery systems, with every component being remotely monitored and controlled by the energy supplier.

Through the coordinated management of electricity generation, household demand, and stored energy, Octopus Energy intends to increase self-consumption rates while improving how homes interact with the electricity network. Even so, achieving zero net electricity costs over a 10-year timeframe will depend on several variables, including the long-term performance of the installed systems, movements in electricity market prices, and the financial returns available from providing grid flexibility services.

A further element of the initiative is the aggregation of residential energy assets. By operating numerous household energy systems as one combined portfolio, Octopus Energy expects to optimize electricity consumption, exports to the grid, and income generated through flexibility markets. This model depends on contractual arrangements under which the company serves both as the electricity supplier and the aggregator, while also overseeing the operation of the connected energy equipment.

The “Zero Bills Homes” concept has previously been rolled out in the United Kingdom and Germany, and the company is now modifying the model for deployment in France. Its implementation will need to comply with the country's regulatory environment, including requirements covering self-consumption, compensation for surplus electricity exported to the grid, and participation in electricity market mechanisms.

Octopus Energy stated that it intends to broaden its collaboration with property developers and local authorities as part of its goal of delivering 15,000 “Zero Bills” homes across France by 2030.
