India recorded electricity demand exceeding 270 gigawatts during a heatwave on May 22, 2026, triggering an evening peak supply shortage of approximately 2.57 gigawatts, according to data from national grid operator Grid-India reported by Reuters. The supply strain caused power outages lasting between 40 minutes and an hour in Chennai, alongside reported interruptions in New Delhi, Noida, and Odisha state, prompting the power ministry to publicly request that consumers reduce unnecessary consumption.

The grid face increased pressure during evening hours because daytime demand benefits from solar generation, whereas night supply depends predominantly on thermal and hydroelectric facilities. Fast-tracking the deployment of battery energy storage systems is essential to capture excess daytime solar power for evening use, according to Disha Aggarwal, a senior programme lead at the energy think tank CEEW.

Clean energy installed capacity in India surpassed total fossil fuel capacity for the first time, reaching 331.7 gigawatts compared to 302.0 gigawatts of fossil-fuel generation facilities, based on Ember and Global Energy Monitor data cited in an Aug. 17, 2026 report. Solar installations expand significantly from 0.07 gigawatts in 2010 to 211 gigawatts, with the country adding 75.5 gigawatts of solar capacity between 2025 and mid-2026 against 3.8 gigawatts of new coal capacity. However, coal facilities continue to supply about 70 percent of actual generation due to their continuous operation relative to intermittent solar production.

The broader increase in electricity consumption is linked to extreme weather conditions driven by climate change alongside expanding energy requirements from digital infrastructure and data centers, per an Aug. 13, 2026 report. Furthermore, systemic operational and financial vulnerabilities within local distribution utilities remain a central constraint on sector reliability, as highlighted in a 2014 World Bank diagnostic review detailing how overall power sector revenues depend directly on customer collection at the distribution stage.
