India achieves 300 GW renewable energy capacity, 60% of 500 GW target by 2030

India has surpassed 300 gigawatts of installed electricity generation capacity derived from non-fossil sources, fulfilling 60 percent of its 2030 goal of reaching 500 gigawatts. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced the milestone, noting that the country's total non-fossil capacity touched 300.50 gigawatts as of July 31, 2026.

The current non-fossil infrastructure comprises 164.59 gigawatts of solar capacity, 58.14 gigawatts of wind installations, 57.24 gigawatts of hydro power, 11.75 gigawatts of bio-power, and 8.78 gigawatts of nuclear generation. These green sources now account for more than 54 percent of India's aggregate electricity generation capacity, which stands at approximately 552 gigawatts.

Solar assets have served as the primary catalyst for expansion, surging from 2.8 gigawatts in 2014 to roughly 165 gigawatts today. Over the same timeframe, wind power expanded to surpass 58 gigawatts, climbing from 21 gigawatts. During the 2025-26 fiscal period alone, the nation commissioned a record 55.29 gigawatts of clean power infrastructure, led by 44.6 gigawatts of solar additions and 6 gigawatts of wind projects.

Annual green energy production scaled from 190.96 billion units during the 2014-15 period to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26. To foster supply chain self-reliance, domestic production capacity has undergone a major transformation. Supported by the Production Linked Incentive program for high-efficiency domestic manufacturing, the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers registry for photovoltaic modules has exceeded 200 gigawatts, up from 2.3 gigawatts in 2014.

Government initiatives are also steering heavy industrial decarbonization and positioning the nation as an international center for green hydrogen manufacturing and export via the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Officials emphasize that this clean transition underpins broader economic resilience, industrial competitiveness, and energy autonomy.
