Habitat Energy will provide trading and optimisation services for two of Australia’s first DC-coupled solar and battery storage projects.
Habitat Energy has been selected to deliver trading and optimization services for two DC-coupled solar and battery storage installations developed by Octopus Australia. Linking the energy storage directly to the photovoltaic facilities allows the sites to harvest greater amounts of renewable power, minimize energy loss, and retain electricity to release during peak consumption periods.
The agreement covers the Fulham Solar Farm and Battery, which features an 80MW solar facility and a 64MW/128MWh battery located in Gippsland, Victoria, scheduled for completion in 2027. It also includes the Blind Creek Solar Farm and Battery in Bungendore, New South Wales, comprising a 300MW solar array and a 243MW/486MWh battery expected to come online in 2028. Combined, the two installations are projected to supply sufficient electricity for more than 150,000 households in Australia.
Under the agreement, Habitat Energy will act as the designated optimiser, employing its automated algorithmic forecasting and trading platform alongside professional traders to manage market bidding and dispatch. This strategy coordinates volatile weather conditions and electricity pricing with site-specific and contractual obligations to optimize the economic return of the renewable generation. To facilitate connection to the National Electricity Market, the company built virtual digital replicas of both locations to perform extensive stress tests and preparation ahead of launch.
Greg Billman, managing director of Habitat Energy Australia, noted that managing solar and storage together is essential for affordable and dependable green energy, though it demands specialized capabilities developed across major global storage markets. Sam Reynolds, CEO of Octopus Australia, added that renewable sources gain significant value when operators can control delivery timing, noting that combining solar and batteries as a unified asset class creates reliable, dispatchable power comparable to traditional coal-fired plants.
With this new agreement, Habitat Energy's operational footprint in Australia extends to include other major assets such as the 250MW Williamsdale battery energy storage system in the Australian Capital Territory and the 100MW Mannum battery energy storage system in South Australia.
