GreenH deploys 1 MW PEM electrolyzer for India’s first hydrogen-powered train

GreenH Electrolysis has delivered and commissioned a 1 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer to power the hydrogen generation and refuelling facility supporting India’s first domestically developed hydrogen-powered train, which operates along the Sonipat–Jind railway section.

The electrolyzer was produced at GreenH’s manufacturing plant in Jhajjar, Haryana. Built using technology licensed from its parent company, H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies, the system has the capacity to generate up to 420 kg of green hydrogen each day.

Indian Railways previously awarded Medha Servo Drives Ltd a contract to convert a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) train running on the Sonipat–Jind route into a hydrogen-powered train. To establish the associated hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure, Medha appointed GreenH Electrolysis to handle the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the facility.

GreenH stated that the hydrogen production and refuelling station has been designed as a fully integrated turnkey installation that includes process engineering, electrical infrastructure, instrumentation and control systems, along with advanced safety features to enable uninterrupted train operations. The installation is equipped with hydrogen storage capable of holding 3,000 kg, as well as hydrogen compressors and pre-cooled hydrogen dispensers for refuelling the train.

GreenH Electrolysis operates as a joint venture between H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies and Castlegreen Energy, manufacturing PEM electrolyzers while also developing green hydrogen production systems for the Indian market.
