A new 8.3-megawatt solar facility in Sötern, located within Germany's Saarland region, demonstrates how utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure can successfully coexist with active agricultural and conservation land uses. Developed by Perigus Energy, the 17.1-acre photovoltaic plant operates on the Weiherhof farm inside an active fallow deer enclosure. Elevated between 5.2 and 5.9 feet off the ground, the installation allows approximately 150 deer to graze, seek summer shade, and take shelter during adverse weather conditions under the panels.

The dual-use project addresses heightened land-use friction in heavily populated nations like Germany, where population density averages around 621 residents per square mile. Under its Federal Climate Change Act, Germany must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2045. Ground-mounted solar capacity, which surpassed 128 gigawatt-peak nationwide by August 2026, frequently faces opposition from agricultural producers concerned about lost arable land and food security, as well as conservationists worried about habitat destruction.

To withstand the autumn rutting season—when elevated testosterone levels cause male fallow deer to aggressively compete for mates—the facility's design incorporates specialized protective animal barriers around high-voltage components, inverters, and electrical cabling. By safeguarding critical power infrastructure while allowing natural foraging and mating behaviors to continue uninterrupted, the installation provides a scalable framework for expanding solar deployment across land-constrained regions without disrupting local wildlife or existing rural operations.
