European Energy Australia has completed the installation of all 200,172 solar modules at its Winton North solar plant in northeast Victoria.
Installation of solar modules has begun at the 131-megawatt Winton North solar plant in Victoria, located on a 256-hectare footprint between Benalla and Glenrowan, about 22 kilometers southwest of Wangaratta. The project will feature a secondary phase adding a 100-megawatt/200-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. Full commercial operations are scheduled for 2027, with the facility projected to deliver 227 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year.
The facility will supply electricity to Amazon to support the technology firm's AU$20 billion (US$14.48 billion) investment in Australian data center infrastructure. Power generated at the site will feed into AusNet's transmission grid at the Glenrowan Terminal Station via a 5-kilometer connection featuring both underground and overhead lines.
Melbourne-based firm All Energy Contracting received the construction agreement for trenching and electrical services in late 2025. Spanish equipment vendor Ingeteam was chosen to supply grid-control systems and inverters, delivering hybrid power controllers alongside plug-and-play medium-voltage power stations to maintain grid stability at the point of interconnection.
Developer European Energy is constructing the site alongside several other developments across Victoria and New South Wales. In March 2026, the company opened the 108-megawatt Lancaster Solar Farm in northern Victoria, its first operating utility-scale project in Australia. Covering 172 hectares with approximately 170,000 solar panels, the Lancaster facility delivers clean electricity to Apple through a long-term power purchase agreement.
During a Danish royal state visit coinciding with the Lancaster opening, European Energy executed a memorandum of understanding with the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation. The agreement establishes framework guidelines for Indigenous employment and business participation on upcoming renewable installations situated on Yorta Yorta land in Victoria.
In adjacent New South Wales, construction has concluded on European Energy's 31-megawatt Mulwala Solar Farm, which has entered the commissioning phase ahead of near-term grid energization. The plant registered with the Australian Energy Market Operator's Market Management System in April 2026 and is set to supply about 66 gigawatt-hours of annual power under a long-term agreement with Zen Energy.
The Lancaster and Mulwala assets, both situated within a 90-minute radius of Winton North, received construction funding through an AU$130 million portfolio financing deal arranged in June 2025 with DZ Bank and Westpac Banking Corporation.
