Bondada Engineering secures 100 MWh vanadium redox flow battery energy storage project from NTPC Renewable Energy

Bondada Engineering Ltd has been awarded a contract by NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd to establish a 100 MWh vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system (BESS) at Gujarat’s Khavda Solar Park.

The Indian renewable energy EPC company, Bondada Engineering Ltd, announced that it has received the order from NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd for the implementation of the 100 MWh vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Delectrik Systems, which will serve as the technology partner, and the scope of work also includes a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) commitment. According to the company, the entire system will be designed, engineered, and manufactured within India.

The energy storage project is intended to facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the country's power grid by utilizing vanadium redox flow battery technology. This technology is widely regarded as one of the leading options for large-scale energy storage because of its extended cycle life, strong recyclability, and high safety standards. It also supports Bharat’s objective of enhancing energy security by lowering long-term reliance on imported battery cells sourced from a limited number of suppliers, while encouraging the use of domestic vanadium reserves or imports from a broader range of international sources.

India aims to deploy around 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, a substantial increase from the nation’s existing installed capacity of approximately 3.3 GWh. With renewable energy installations continuing to expand at a rapid pace, long-duration storage technologies such as vanadium redox flow battery energy storage systems are expected to become essential for maintaining grid stability and supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner energy.
