In the previous month, Aukera completed the financial closing for the 170 MW/340 MWh Project Volt battery energy storage system located in La Louvière, Belgium, which was advanced through a joint venture with Weerts Group.

Lately, Romania has emerged as one of the most dynamic BESS markets across Europe. Momentum has intensified through announcements at the gigawatt scale, spearheaded by Enery’s US$530 million funding arrangement for its 761 MWp solar and over 1 GWh BESS initiative at Ogrezeni, which is expected to stand as one of the continent’s biggest hybrid developments.

The rollout of these systems stems from declining battery costs, increased assurance among backers, and particular conditions within the country. Romania’s growing solar generation has produced a clear duck curve effect, as midday solar output drives down prices during the day and generates needs for evening ramp-ups, mirroring the forces behind large-scale storage deployments in places such as California and Australia.

The current policy framework now backs energy storage by speeding up grid hookups for projects that combine renewables with storage and by removing double taxation burdens through waivers on transmission charges as well as green certificate obligations.

On top of that, both Bulgaria and Romania have directed resources from the Recovery and Resilience Plan toward gigawatts of storage capacity. Eurowind Energy’s 116 MWh BESS installed at the Teiuș solar park obtained US$24 million as part of Romania’s allocation from the EU National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Romanian energy solutions firm ENEVO Group along with developer Kraftfeld Energy have entered into an agreement for building a 110 MW/220 MWh battery energy storage system in Drăgănești-Olt, Olt County, Romania.

The deal was made public on 25 June and covers linkage to the national grid in Romania; it was formalized during Intersolar Europe 2026. Kraftfeld Energy holds ownership of the project, while ENEVO Group serves as the primary EPC contractor in charge of the full turnkey design, procurement, and construction work for the BESS along with its related high-voltage substation.

Work on the site is set to start during the third quarter of 2026, and the system is slated for commissioning and commercial service in the beginning of 2027.

ENEVO indicated that the initiative bolsters its role as an engineering, procurement, and construction partner focused on utility-scale battery storage within Romania, “adding to a portfolio that now stands over 1GWh of storage projects in execution or already in operation.”

During March, the China-headquartered original equipment manufacturer Sungrow finalized a pact with ENEVO for delivering 1 GWh of BESS equipment to various schemes positioned in Romania. The initial portion involves 440 MWh worth of projects that were ordered earlier this year and are due for delivery prior to December 2026. A following stage will incorporate another 560 MWh, resulting in a cumulative capacity exceeding 1 GWh after all developments reach completion.

In April, Kraftfeld Energy and the investor Alfi Green Energy Fund finalized a deal to form a joint venture with a 65:35 percent split aimed at advancing a 126 MW solar and 200 MWh BESS undertaking in Romania. Commercial operations are projected to commence at the outset of 2027.

PPC Renewables Romania, which belongs to the Greek state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC), plans to construct a 40.08 MW/80.16 MWh BESS inside the Corugea wind farm (CEE Corugea).

PPC reported that the overall project carries a value of RON87.4 million (US$19.04 million), including US$2.1 million in European co-financing channeled via the Modernisation Fund.

Situated in the South-East region within the town of Casimcea, the Corugea wind farm hosting the BESS features 35 turbines that deliver a combined installed capacity of 70 MW.

The facility generates roughly 190,000 MWh each year and helps prevent more than 130,000 tons of CO₂ emissions on an annual basis.

Beyond installing the BESS, the undertaking includes erecting required infrastructure components, organizing exploitation paths along with access and perimeter fencing roads, putting in place safety illumination and oversight systems, plus designating zones for operational activities, upkeep, protection, and overall site management.

Financing for the project comes from the Modernisation Fund, an entity that backs capital outlays for batteries linked to already operating renewable energy generation sites.

The total investment reaches approximately US$19 million. The highest amount covered by the Modernisation Fund equals 11.41 percent of the project’s full value, specifically US$21 million, while PPC Renewables Romania accounts for US$17 million.

PPC noted that the initiative advances the firm’s approach to speeding up its holdings in energy storage and renewable sources, “with storage projects that can actively contribute to system stability, through the predictable production profile provided by battery storage.”

Earlier in the year, PPC disclosed intentions to set up a 60.12 MWh BESS at its Sălbatica 1 wind farm, which would likewise receive backing from the Modernisation Fund.
