Oman is investing in a 6 GW solar cell and module factory as part of a $1.74 billion investment package across 105 strategic projects.
Oman is moving ahead with plans for a 6 GW solar cell and module manufacturing plant as part of a broader investment program valued at $1.74 billion and covering 105 strategic developments.
The country intends to establish a fully integrated facility capable of producing 6 GW of solar cells and modules each year.
The proposed manufacturing complex is among the 105 projects unveiled earlier this week by Future Fund Oman (FFO), the nation’s sovereign wealth fund.
These projects, which extend across renewable energy, manufacturing, tourism, healthcare, medical technology, innovation, and food production, have been designated as strategically important initiatives as Oman seeks to speed up the diversification of its economy.
In a statement issued by the Oman Investment Authority (OIA), officials said the 6 GW solar cell and module plant will be developed within the Sohar Freezone. The authority described it as “the first of its kind in the Middle East and a cornerstone of localizing the solar value chain.”
Additional information about the planned manufacturing facility has not yet been disclosed. The OIA said the package of 105 strategic projects will receive $585 million in commitments from FFO, alongside approximately $458 million in domestic investment. Altogether, the portfolio has been valued at $1.74 billion.
Among the other strategic initiatives is the Gallant Industrial Project, which is expected to manufacture 66,000 tonnes of lithium ion phosphate cathode material each year. According to the OIA, producing lithium ion phosphate domestically will connect Oman to “the fast-growing clean energy and storage markets.”
Over recent years, Oman has been building out its domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem. The country’s flagship polysilicon plant, which is also situated in the Sohar Freezone, became the largest facility of its type outside China after beginning operations earlier this year.
Earlier this month, project developer United Solar announced that it had secured the full $1.6 billion in financing required for the polysilicon factory.
